In this fall semester, I began my graduate studies in the English Department. This semester, I decided to dedicate my graduate studies to first focus on my writing and become a more well-rounded story-teller. I was noticing that in my mental health studies, I was neglecting my writing and my studying of writing. I did not feel like my undergraduate English studies were enough to help my craft, so I decided to switch my graduate plans to first do a more in-depth study of English literature, rhetoric, and writing. In this semester, I took two courses: American Romanticism and Introduction to the Profession.
American Romanticism
The American Romanticism course was one of the most interesting courses I had. This course allowed students to explore the American Romanticism Era. We read some very interesting stories and novels, one of them being one of my favorite reads of 2018: Ruth Hall. This course was a literature course that allowed the class to study more amazing works by Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Thoreau, and Emerson. This was also one of my favorite graduate classes because the professor was the same one that taught my British Literature course while an undergraduate, and I recalled his engaging teaching style.
Introduction to the Profession
This course design interesting because it helped students research and understand what all students can do when they graduate with their Masters in English. This course helped us be able to get a list of career paths that we would like to take and also helped us come up with what we our Graduate Philosophy, Scholarly Identity, and even our Teaching Philosophies are. Our main assignment for this course was to create a digital portfolio, which I have expanded on to also work as a digital platform for my writing.
