Fall 2016

In this fall semester, I began my graduate studies. I commenced my graduate studies in a counseling program before decided to change my career plans at the end of the semester. However, this semester provided a lot of important and interesting studies in mental health. By far, my favorite class was the Abnormal Psychology class since I was unable to take this course as an undergraduate student. In this semester, I took three courses: Abnormal Psychology, Individual Counseling Theories, and Group Counseling Theories and Techniques.

Abnormal Psychology

As stated above this course was my favorite because it was a course more centered on mental health disorders. This course allowed an closer study of the DSM-5 manual, and our final assignment had us look at a particular mental health disorder for us to learn more about. This course allowed us to understand specific mental health disorders and then discuss our findings with the class.

Individual Counseling Theories

This course was also interesting to me because it allowed me to understand how mental health professionals approach each individual person they encounter. This course allowed me to see how in-depth mental health professionals have to go in order to help others while at the same time allowing the students to begin to think as mental health professionals tasked with helping others cope with their mental health battles.

Group Counseling Theories and Techniques

The group counseling course was interesting because the structure of it was very different than the other two counseling courses I was taking. In this course we were tasked with conducting a group counseling session for about forty-five minutes each class with each student being tasked with the acting role of the mental health counselor. This course was interesting because it helped us be able to see how a group counseling session takes place and the responsibility the mental health counselor has in the session.
