Loony Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood was a fictional character in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The presentation of Luna was in Rowling’s fifth Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Now, this was a particularly interesting character in the Harry Potter series, not that the other characters were not. However, Luna was an extraordinary character in another sense. Of course, Harry Potter and his two friends, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger, were the main characters throughout the Harry Potter series. However, there must have been something about Luna Lovegood that Rowling wanted the reader to get. Through the series, Rowling gave titles to her chapters, and at times named some of the chapters after a particular character. Why was it that Rowling gave a chapter heading to the “Looney” Luna Lovegood? Perhaps, by observing Luna from a mental health perspective, the reader may get the impression that there was more to Luna’s “Looney” nickname that the reader should have understood. By using the DSM-5 and other related articles, an examination of Luna was as if she were a mental health client. Furthermore, this paper will attempt to give some reasoning to why Luna was so “Looney.” By the end, the reader should have an understanding of Luna Lovegood’s odd ways and will better understand that her “Looney” nickname did seem to incorporate a mental health aspect to it.
